Burundi Preparing For 2020 Elections
The government of Burundi has confirmed that it is proceeding with preparations to hold general elections in 2020. While the country has experienced high levels of conflict and unrest since 2015 the authorities have determined that peace and security are sufficient to ahead.
The National Electoral Independent Commission (CENI) will coordinate the elections. However a recent report by the EAC’s Inter-Burundi Dialogue questioned the role of the government in the matter and expressed deep concern regarding the current political situation in the country. The report and Dialogue were facilitated by former President of Tanzania Benjamin Mkapa.
