Tanzanian MP Tundu Lissu May Face Arrest Upon Return

Opposition MP Tundu Lissu is looking to return to Tanzania once he is deemed medically fit to make the journey. He left the country after he was shot outside parliament in 2017 in what he claims was an assassination attempt.

Comments made this week by Tanzania’s minister of home affairs, Kangi Lugola, suggest Lissu may face incarceration if he does choose to return. Lugola has been quoted as commenting "I am surprised, why the police haven't arrested Mr Lissu just like they have been arresting loiterers... he has been wandering around the globe, while insisting that he is still sick."

"If he has recovered he should return to the country to assist with investigations rather than going around the world while making accusations against authorities," he added.

Lissu also faces the suspension of his parliamentary seat with MPs set to debate the matter shortly.
