Sudan’s TMC Ordered To Lift Internet Blackout

The courts in Sudan have ordered the ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) to end a national internet blockade.

Internet connections were shut down following the June 3rd crackdown on protestors outside the military’s headquarters in Khartoum when activists and opposition actors claim more than 100 civilians were killed.

The court ruling calls for an immediate lifting of the block, although the TMC may choose to appeal the decision on security grounds.

Negotiations regarding a transition to civilian rule remain fragile. While protest leaders have accepted proposals from an Ethiopian envoy to create a civilian-majority governing body for the transition, they have refused to sit-down with military leaders to discuss arrangements following June 3rd until certain conditions have been met.
