Ethiopia Suspected Coup Leader Killed

The suspected ringleader of a coup attempt Brig-Gen Asaminew Tsige has been killed following following the assassination of the chief of staff of the Ethiopian army Gen Seare Mekonnen and killing of regional governor of Amhara National Region.

The Government has reassured civilians that the situation is under control and urged them to remain united against attempts to fuel conflict and tensions. Several arrests have been made, according to the Office of the Prime Minister.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has expressed his concern at the coup attempt. Commenting on events Guterres called on “all Ethiopian stakeholders to demonstrate restraint, prevent violence and avoid any action that could undermine the peace and stability of Ethiopia”.
