Burundi Seizes Opposition’s Assets
The Supreme Court in Burundi has ordered the seizure of assets belonging to members of the opposition and government critics who are currently in exile.
More than 30 politicians, rights campaigners and journalist are affected by the ruling. One of the opposition politicians named Vital Nshimirimana Tweeted following the order “Pierre Nkurunziza and his henchmen continue the persecution of opponents of the 3rd mandate by seizing their property… a decision which once again ridicules the Burundian justice system,”
The Government of Burundi continues to come under criticism for its handling of the opposition, which it alleged supported a coup plot against President Nkurunziza after he announced he would run for a third term in office in 2015. The announcement sparked violence which left more than 1,200 deal and thousands displaced.
Several military officers who have been jailed for their role in the alleged plot are also affected by the court ruling.
