Former Liberian President’s Son Charged
Charles Sirleaf, the son of former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Liberia, has been arrested and charged with economic sabotage.
The charges are connected with the unlawful printing of local currency totalling millions during the time at which Sirleaf was serving as deputy governor of the Central Bank. They follow the publication of an independent report into the alleged disappearance of more than $100mn published last week, which found that the Bank had acted unlawfully by printing and importing three times the amount it had been authorised to.
Four other former officials also face charges, with two said to be on the run.
