Ethiopia Mediates Kenya-Somalia Maritime Dispute

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is today mediating talks between Kenya and Somalia concerning a maritime dispute.

The Indian Ocean oil blocks are currently subject to an International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling raised in August 2014. However, diplomatic tensions increased last month in an incident in which Kenya accused Somalia of marketing the contested area, removed its ambassador from the country and instructed the Somali ambassador in Kenya to leave Nairobi.

Abiy Ahmed is in Nairobi along with the Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.

Speaking on the visit, President Farmajo said on Twitter, "The president’s main objective is to restore and strengthen diplomatic relations with the Republic of Kenya."
