Kenyan Government Clamps Down On Betting
Kenya has taken several moves recently to clamp down on the country’s betting industry. This week the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) ordered Airtel to shutdown betting paybills for those firms whose licences have not been renewed.
Safaricom was previously issued with a similar directive after the BCLB announced that it had declined to renew licences for 19 firms on July 1.
Meanwhile, earlier this week the Kenyan government ordered the deportation of 17 foreign directors of betting firms. The move follows the introduction of new regulation for the industry in May that outlawed outdoor and social media advertising.
The country’s betting industry is estimated to be worth around US$2 billion.
