Ugandan Government Automates Mineral Licensing

The Government of Uganda is phasing out the manual issuance of mineral licenses as it automates the process.

According to permanent secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development Mr Robert Kasande licensing will now take place using a customised online platform.

The move is intended increase efficiency and transparency, providing a fast-track for licensing that guards against speculators and supports increased government revenues in the sector.

As part of the initiative a review of the department’s existing records is being undertaken, with non-compliant licenses subject to removal by the authorities. As of the end of 2018 a total of 844 mineral concession licenses had been issued.

Mineral rights holders and applicants have been advised to register online with the Directorate of Geological Surveys and Mines by the end of July.
