DRC Adopts EAC Electronic Cargo Tracking

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is now part of an Electronic Cargo Tracking System that already encompasses Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.

The initiative seeks to support the growth of regional trade and integration within the East African Community (EAC) by providing real-time tracking of cargo trucks between Mombasa ports and the respective countries. It is funded by Trademark East Africa, who signed an official agreement with revenue officials in the DRC and the Uganda Revenue Authority earlier this month.

Reduced travel times, security risks and dumping are among the benefits of the platform, which is supported by Google Maps, Global Positioning System technology and field security teams. Security concerns have proved a particular problem for traders in eastern DRC as a result of the various militia groups in the region. Poor infrastructure is another barrier to increased trade.
