Uganda’s IGG Blocks Army Pharma Deal
The Inspector General of Government (IGG) Justice Irene Mulyagonja has blocked a proposed join venture deal between the Uganda People’s Defence Force’s National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) Pharmaceuticals and a German drug firm.
Claiming that the German firm, Chemperion GmbH, does not appear to have sufficient technical experience Justice Mulyagonja has advised Solicitor General Francis Atoke not to approve the deal. Explaining her recommendation, Mulyagonja stated that there has been an investigation into the proposed deal for the production of pharmaceutical drugs in the country.
“Investigations established that Chemperion GmbH does not have the technical competence and experience in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. Chemperion GmbH’s financial capability also could not be established based on the documents availed during the investigations,” Justice Mulyagonja wrote in a February 28 letter to Atoke.
