2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup final to be played at the iconic Maracana stadium
FIFA has confirmed that next year’s Women’s World Cup final to be hosted by Brazil will be staged at the iconic Estadio do Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
The confirmation was made on Thursday during the release of the full match schedule for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The tournament will have 64 games played across eight cities in Brazil.
Maracanã will become only the third stadium to host both a FIFA World Cup final and a FIFA Women’s World Cup final, joining the now-demolished Råsunda Stadium in Solna, Sweden (1958 and 1995) and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, USA (1994 and 1999).
The stadium was opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup, in which Brazil was beaten 2–1 by Uruguay in the deciding game, in front of a still standing record attendance of 210,850 spectators, on 16 July 1950.
The venue has seen attendances of 150,000 or more at 26 occasions and has seen crowds of more than 100,000 as many as 284 times but as terraced sections have been replaced with seats over time, and after the renovation following the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, its original capacity has been reduced to the current 73,139.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino is already excited about the tournament and says, “We can’t wait to witness a new chapter of women’s football history unfold when the world’s best players, coaches, fans and local communities take centre stage in Brazil next year,”
“I already have goosebumps thinking about the incredible passion, colour and energy that Brazilian fans will bring to the tournament as they welcome the world to eight vibrant Host Cities.” He added.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 is slated to take place between 24th June to 25th July.
