Sessegnon Scores but Tottenham Fall Short in Munich
Tottenham’s young winger Ryan Sessegnon starred in his first start for the English side, but his goal failed to make the difference as the North London club lost 3-1 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last night.
Frenchman Kingsley Coman opened the scoring early in the first half with a tidy finish from inside the box to the bottom right corner, before the former Fulham left-back Sessegnon hammered in a powerful equaliser past Neuer’s near post.
But Tottenham couldn’t take advantage of the swing in momentum, and never really looked like challenging the German Bundesliga champions.
Thomas Müller poached a classic centre forward goal from the edge of the six-yard box having come on to replace Coman, who had picked up an injury halfway through the first half.
Former Liverpool striker Philippe Coutinho looked dangerous all night, and sealed Bayern’s win with a beautiful strike from 25-yards out, curling the ball into the bottom right corner.
Bayern looked assured all night, with 70% of possession and 24 shots compared to just 7 for Tottenham.
Both teams had already qualified for the Last 16 of the competition, so the result didn’t mean too much in way of standings, but if Jose Mourinho’s side want to be challenging for the trophy this year, they will have to produce much better performances.
