One dead as police crush Bobi Wine event

A woman as died after being hit by a vehicle at an event organised by Ugandan opposition figure Bobi Wine in the capital, Kampala.

The event was organised as a consultative meeting, but soon led to violent clashes between Wine’s supporters and police.

Authorities attempted to block the event, saying he had not met the requirements set by the electoral commission.

This led to demonstrations, which the police responded to with tear gas and live rounds.

According to The Observer newspaper, Rita Nabukenya, a supporter of Wine, was riding a motorcycle taxi when she was hit by a vehicle driving alongside her.

Both the police and Wine have given conflicting accounts, with Wine accusing the police of causing the accident, which they deny.

“Yet again, a leader of the People Power Movement has been murdered by the Museveni regime.  Police officers in a patrol vehicle saw comrade Rita Nabukenya donning our attire, drove after her and knocked her dead in broad daylight.

“We must end this regime of blood”, he tweeted.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said Ms Nabukenya was seriously injured after falling off the motorcycle, at which time police took her to hospital, where she died whilst receiving treatment.

Bobi Wine, a singer-turned-activist, has pledged to challenge President Museveni in next year’s general election.
