Ugandan MPs fight in parliament

Two Ugandan MPs have admitted to fighting each other in parliament after one accused the other of canvassing his constituents to vote him out.

Speaking to the Daily Monitor newspaper, Anthony Akol, who represents the Kilak North county, admitted to slapping Odonga Otto, who represents Aruu county.

Mr Akol said he confronted Mr Otto in parliament to ask why he was campaigning to get him voted out by his own constituents.

Mr Otto revealed he had been canvassing for his removal and accused him of selling off parcels of public land.

Mr Akol said he then slapped Mr Otto before a fight broke out, before the men were separated by fellow MPs.

The Kilak North county MP told the Daily Monitor “I am heavyweight; if I boxed Odonga Otto, he’d be down.  I didn’t box him.  When he kicked my knee, I had to just defend myself.”

Responding to the same newspaper, Mr Otto said “I am a martial artist.  If I reciprocated, he would start crying.  I am trained, I know the points to touch.”
