President Kiir Meets With Sudanese Rebel Leaders

President of South Sudan Salva Kiir has this week met with Dr Gibril Ibrahim Mohammed of the Darfur rebel faction Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). South Sudan is also sponsoring a meeting between the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) and factions of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N). 

President Kiir is seeking to reconcile armed groups with the ruling military junta, as well as engaging with opposition leaders to try and secure stability in Sudan following the removal of former President Omar al-Bashir from office earlier this year. 

In a statement on the meeting the presidency wrote, “The efforts of President Kiir to bring peace to Sudan are geared towards ensuring that all the rebel movements in Sudan end the on-going political turmoil and accept peace as they work collectively with the leadership of the Transitional Military Council and the Freedom and Change movement.”
