DRC Politicians Agree Government Pact

President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) took power in January. However, as a result of his party’s failure to secure a majority in parliament he has struggled to form a government.

Seven months on since elections and Tshisekedi and his CACH alliance has concluded talks with the Common Front for Congo (FCC) coalition, which holds a majority in parliament and the provincial assemblies. The FCC alliance is led by former president Joseph Kabila.

Under the final agreement Kabila’s choice for Prime Minister, Sylvestre Ilunkamba, is expected to be formally nominated shortly. Ilunkamba was named by Tshisekedi in May. However, subsequent disagreements concerning various other appointees have seen his appointment delayed. 42 government members are expected to come from the FCC and 23 from the CACH. It has not yet been announced which ministries will go to which group.
