AU Suspends Sudan’s Membership

The African Union (AU) has suspended Sudan following the violent break up of a sit-in protest by military earlier this week, which led to more than 100 fatalities.

According to the body the suspension will be in place until the governing military council hands over power to a civilian administration.

"The #AU Peace and Security Council has with immediate effect suspended the participation of the Republic of #Sudan in all #AU activities until the effective establishment of a Civilian-led Transitional Authority, as the only way to allow the Sudan to exit from the current crisis,” the AU stated on Twitter.

The move was unanimously backed by members following an emergency meeting held on Thursday. It followed calls by the chair of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, for an investigation into Monday’s killings.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is expected in Khartoum Friday to facilitate discussions between the military and civilian-led opposition and protest movements.
