Ugandan MPs Reject Government Report On Bank Of Uganda

MPs in Uganda have rejected a preliminary government report on the currency saga at the Bank of Uganda, demanding a serious report.

Three Bank of Uganda (BoU) officials have been implicated and charged with corruption.

Commenting on the report junior finance minister Mr David Bahati stated, "So far there is no indication that this incident will affect our economy negatively especially in terms of inflation. I appeal to the public to restrain from perpetuating false information that could compromise the investigations."

Mr Bahati told parliament that the authorities will get to the bottom of the matter and that investigations were going well. As it stands the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development is awaiting the final report from the Anti-Corruption Unit.

However, MPs did not appear impressed with his update, calling for more detail and demanding answers to questions such as whether there was extra money that had been printed and which actors have breached provisions for chartered plane services. The government chief whip Ms Ruth Nankabirwa also described Mr Bahati’s statement as confusing. "Yes, you don't want to compromise the investigations but what was in that pallet? We need to know such that we can be at rest. We also need to know the owners of the extra pallets," Ms Nankabirwa stated.
