President Museveni Accepts 2021 Nomination

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has accepted his nomination by the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRC) to contest the 2021 presidential elections.

The decision was taken by the party’s Central Executive Committee and endorsed by NRM MPs. Among the reasons cited for his adoption as the sole candidate were the importance of peace and stability.

Accepting the nomination the President is quoted as stating, "I am therefore humbled by your confidence in me, & since I am still very able, I'm sure that together, we shall in the coming years finally deliver an economy that can sustainably deliver jobs to our young people."

His acceptance means there will be no internal contest for the position. If he is re-elected to the presidency it will be his sixth term in office. To date he has served 33 years in power.

Among the other candidates to have declared their intention to contest the polls are MP Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as musician Bobi Wine, veteran opposition leader Kizza Besigye and former candidate Maureen Kyalya.
