Burundi Challenges Election of EALA Speaker
Burundi is contesting the election of Martin Ngoga as the fifth Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA). The country’s counsel claims that the elections violated the East African Community (EAC) Treaty as they were held without lawmakers from Burundi and Tanzania.
The election took place on December 19 2018 with the matter now before the East African Court of Justice. Burundi and Tanzania boycotted the process after their candidates for the position were dropped.
Rwandan member Martin Ngoga was elected to the position to replace Daniel Kidega, who had held the post since 2014.
