Ugandan Firms Compete For Marijuana Contracts
As many as 50 firms, both international and domestic, are competing for the right to grows and export marijuana for medical purposes.
The interest from firms comes following the passage of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 2015. However, the authorities are yet to complete the necessary consultations relating to the industry, or devise the required regulation to oversee the sector.
According to reports by Uganda’s Daily Monitory the number of people and private companies seeking to grow and export weed for medical purposes increased from 20 in April to 50 in July.
Health minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng is reported as having informed the applicant companies that government has not yet started issuing operational permits for the growing and processing of the drug for medicinal purposes.
However, Israeli firm Together Pharma Limited is already active in the country, last month announcing a harvest of the plant.
