Acacia Mine Fined $2.4mn For Pollution

Acacia Mining has been fined $2.4mn for alleged pollution at North Mara mine in Tanzania. The fine relates to an Environmental Protection Order (EPO) issued by the National Environment Management Council (NEMC).

Acacia has two weeks in which to pay the fine and three weeks to address the source of the pollution, which has been identified as being problems with the mine’s tailings dam.

The mining company has been at odds with the government concerning a tax dispute and the ban of the export of minerals from its other mines Bulyanhulu and Buzwagi. It has also been at odds with its parent company, Barrick Gold, concerning its difficult relationship with the government.
