Rwanda Investigates Loss-Making Agriculture
The Parliament in Rwanda has commissioned a committee to examine losses in the agriculture sector and establish the reason for losses by farmers. During discussion in the House the issue of quality concerns were raised as a contributing factor, meaning farmers are unable to secure a good price for their outputs.
MP Euthalie Nyirabega also noted the struggle some farmers have in securing agro-chemicals and fertilisers as being significant, as well as the limited choice of seeds available to them.
The decision to form the committee was approved by a majority of MPs during a vote. Members also raised concerns regarding the level of taxation facing rice farmers.
