Rwanda Secures $200 Million Energy Plant

Symbion Power has established a $200 million energy plant. Located by Lake Kivu, the plant is expected to generate 56 megawatts of electricity within the next 14 months.

A second phase for the project is also planned, with a projected investment of $105 million.

The development has been welcomed by the Government as part of its bid to increase generation capacity from the existing 221 megawatts to 512 megawatts by 2024, and ensure universal access to electricity. Around 1.2 million households are connected to the grid, with access currently at 51 per cent.

Minister for Infrastructure Claver Gatete was quoted as saying, “We cannot achieve the target without investors like Symbion in the private sector."

Other projects under was include the Hakan Peak project, which will add an estimated 80 megawatts capacity and the Rusumo Hydro-electric projects, which will add around 26.7 megawatts.
