Costs Increase For Dar Route to Port
Tanzania has lowered its cargo weight limits, meaning higher transport costs for businesses using and higher prices for consumer. Authorities have explained the move in terms of seeking to comply with the East Africa Community Vehicle Load Control Act of 2016.
The move will also impact Rwandan businesses that use the Dar es Salaam port route. According to the chairman of the Rwandan Private Sector Federation Robert Bapfakurera a 10 per cent loss could result for firms that were previously able to transport 27 tonnes but now facing a reduction to 25 tonnes. Transports costs already account for a high percentage of the price of imported goods, thought to stand at around 30 to 40%.
