Tanzania Advises Importers To Use Tanga Port
Authorities in Tanzania have advised petroleum importers from the northern regions to use Tanga port instead of the port in Dar es Salaam in a bid to lower pump prices in the region.
The directive comes despite concerns among importers that the Tanga port is less efficient. However, the port is currently under expansion and it is hoped that dredging will enable the port to increase its capacity to a million tonnes annually. Government is also in favour of increase storage facilities at the port.
The upgrades are also expected to benefit the Ugandan petroleum sector, with plans for importers to reach Kampala via Tanga.
Last year the authorities directed importers handling fuel for southern Tanzania to use Mtwara ports both as a way to reduce costs and to reduce congestion on the roads.
