Ethiopia Develops First Mineral Policy

The Government of Ethiopia has developed its first draft mineral policy, which was this week tabled by the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum.

While there are existing laws and regulations governing the sector, to date there has been no policy. It is hoped that the policy will encourage investment and development of the country’s mineral sector.

According to the Minister of Mines and Petroleum, Assefa Kumsa, the proposed policy focuses on gold and metals, as well as providing guidance on other minerals. It was developed as a result of a consultative process over a three-month period.

The draft policy is now expected before the Council of Minister for approval.
